Five For Friday 05.13.16

As the end of the year is drawing to a close, life seems busier than ever. Just glancing over at my May calendar stresses me out! The last day of school is going to be here before I know it.

Our week was totally packed full with tons of different activities in science, math, and reading - my kids had such a blast with them this week that I thought I'd link up with Kacey at Doodlebugs Teaching for this week's Five for Friday to share some of them!

We started on our shapes unit this week, which is always one of my favorites! There are so many amazing, hands-on, fun geometry activities to do with your students. Since my first graders already have a strong concept of the shape names, I just did a quick review and re-introduced the attributes of sides and vertices. I gave each student a flat plane shape and called out different sorting rules - it was then their job to go around the room and find their matching group. For example, I'd say, "Find everyone who has a shape with 4 sides"; or, "Find everyone who has a shape with curved edges". And then they scrambled around to find their grouping matches.

After we practiced sorting by different attributes, we did our own little shape sort by counting the number of sides!

The shape sort and tons of other activities can be found here (click the picture to see more!):

We just wrapped up a little mini-unit reading the book Frog and Toad are Friends! My kids absolutely LOVED it and could not get enough. At the end of it, they made this adorable Frog and Toad craft with opinion writing - they had to describe which character they thought was the best friend and why. So fun!

We've been learning all about the ways Earth change, including the four layers of the Earth. I've been using a ton of different strategies to teach them about the four layers including songs, movement/tableau activities, videos, and anchor charts (blog post coming soon with all the details!). I wanted to include another hands on activity for them to complete, so I created a layers of the Earth flip book to go with full-color anchor charts! My kids used the anchor charts to fill in the blank for each book page to tell about what the four layers of the Earth were made of. They loved it! You can click on the picture below to check out more of the details!

In keeping with our Earth changes unit, we've also been learning about things like volcanoes and earthquakes! My teammate had this great little experiment to show how volcanoes erupt - using old film canisters, you glue an Alka-Seltzer tablet inside the lid and then fill the canister half-full with water. Then you put the lid on, turn the canister upside down on the ground, and then BACK UP! After awhile, the pressure builds and it explodes, just like a volcano! My kids were SO excited! Here's a little video so you can see how it went!

I only have 7 1/2 days of school left! So crazy! In the meantime I'm going crazy trying to figure out how I'm going to complete all my assessments, fill out all my end of the year paperwork, practice for our first grade performance, finish up end of the year projects, attend multiple meetings, practice for a teacher talent show, etc. etc. etc.! Why does everything pile up SO much at the end of the year? I know y'all can relate, so this meme is all of us.

We can make it!

A Little Shape Fun & Teacher Appreciation TPT SALE!

Happy Sunday friends! I've got a short little update on a couple of shape activities we did last week along with an exciting TPT announcement that I'm sure all of you have already heard about!

I wanted to go back and review shapes and attributes with my kiddos, so for a couple of days we went back and did some shape activities for identifying how many sides and vertices the shapes had. When I re-introduced the concept, I drew a bunch of shapes on the whiteboard and we practiced how to visually identify each of those attributes. To identify and count the vertices, we drew a dot at each corner. To identify and count the sides, we drew lines along each side. This way was so helpful for my students because it helped them keep track of the ones they already counted!

On day two we created our own shapes to practice identifying sides and vertices using a ball of yarn. I chose a bunch of students to hold and create a corner of the shape wherever they wanted to put it. Then I chose remaining kids to lay down underneath each "side" so that we could have a visual to count for how many we had. They loved this! They were so cute using their shape vocabulary as we were creating our new shapes, too. Squint your eyes closely to see our shape! The yarn kinda blends into the carpet. :)

After we practiced counting sides and vertices on our shape creations, we did this little activity sheet that one of my fabulous teammates made. They used highlighters to mark and count the sides and vertices, and then in the last box they had to create their own shape just like we did! The friend below made themselves a "tree" shape! They also had to identify whether the shapes had curved or straight edges.

We also did a few activities from my best-selling unit, Shapes Galore for the Common Core!

And great news! Teacher Appreciation Week is this week! TPT is throwing a huge sale May 7-8 where you can get up to 28% off your purchases by entering the code TAD13! And EVERY product in my little shop will be on sale! My wishlist has been piling up so I am super excited to get a few of those products I've been keeping my eye on too! {Shapes Galore for the Common Core!} Teaching Unit

I am excited to announce a new product I just posted on TeachersPayTeachers and Teacher's Notebook... Shapes Galore for the Common Core! This unit includes fun activities and resources for 2D and 3D shapes and meets the common core standards! This unit is perfect for teaching and reinforcing skills about shapes. It includes posters, word wall cards, and math ring vocab cards for 2D shapes and fun activities such as shape hunts, spinner games, sorting mat/pocket chart activities for 2D/3D shapes, and more! Check out the two preview images below:

You can click on the cover page below to take you to the product in my TPT store, or click on any of the two links to my stores in the right sidebar on my blog.

Along with using the resources from my unit, here are a few other shape activities I did with my kiddos. To learn about shapes and their attributes (how many sides, etc.) we create a fun shape people book. When they create the shape people, they have to make the eyes, nose, and mouth into whatever shape the body is. Here's a sample from the "square" page in my teacher created book:

We also do a lot of work in interactive math journals. To make life easier with labeling pages to show what activity we are working on, I just print the words on sticky mailing labels and there is no gluing involved! When we were learning about hexagons, since they are super tricky for my kinders to draw, they each got a plastic shape manipulative and traced them all over the page. The 3D shape (cube) attributes and circle map page shown next to the hexagon page is included in my new shapes unit!

To continue on with 3D shapes, we sang this poem often and the kids would take turns holding each 3D shape in the air whenever they heard the name of the shape read aloud.

And we used marshmallows and round toothpicks (they're not sharp) to build 3D shapes! They LOVED building these!

Hopefully you can use some of these activities in your own classroom! Thanks for checking out my unit on TPT! :)
